We Believe in Lifting Up Our Local Community
At Jafe Cycling, we began our bicycle repair shop as a way to lift up our local community and provide opportunities for those being severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic to discover a fun and safe way to take control of their health and wellness. For us, and many adults and youths in our community, cycling has become a way to overcome the hardships of living in underprivileged neighborhoods and a way to help us look forward to a brighter future.
Jafe Cycling is more than just a bicycle repair shop. We are committed to becoming an institution in our community. We want to bring individuals and families from all walks of life together and forge a new path that teaches our youth the importance of physical health and mental stability from a young age. We believe that cycling can become an outlet for those overcoming hardships as well as a foundation for a life full of health and happiness.
Our Non-Profit Programs
In an effort to give back to our local community and bring cycling to a wider audience, Jafe Cycling has created two non-profit programs, including:
- The DMV Trails Tour
- The DMV Trails League
The Annual DMV Trails Tour
The DMV Trails Tour is an annual bicycle tour founded in 2020 by the owner of Jafe Cycling, Matt Onojafe. The tour is designed to encourage the community to get involved in the biking movement and to focus on remaining active. The purpose of the tour is to promote health and wellness in the African American community, a population that has been vastly affected by the global pandemic.
The DMV Trails Tour consists of four trails located throughout Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. The event partners with state and local governments, local businesses, and non-profit organizations to provide guided routes for riders to ensure safety. A percentage of all the fundraising donations during the DMV Trail Tour get donated to the AWANA Clubs, a world-wide non-profit boys and girls club, to encourage the next generation of cyclists to start early and to help cultivate their love of cycling.
Participants in the DMV Trails Tour can choose from multiple distance goals of 15-, 30-, or 100-mile courses. The tour is designed to be an all-inclusive group ride and riders should sign up for the length of course that matches their skill level. Trails include the Anacostia River Trail, the Hains Point Trail, the Mt. Vernon Trail, and the Washington and Old Dominion Trail.
Our Youth Cycling Team: The DMV Trails League
Jafe Cycling is also the founder of the DMV Trails League, a youth cycling program designed to encourage young adults, teenagers, big kids, and toddlers to get outside and be physically active in a positive way. The DMV Trails League provides our youth with a new way to see their local community — through two wheels.
Jafe Cycling is committed to bringing the opportunity to participate in cycling to the youth throughout our neighborhoods. As a low-impact sport, cycling promotes a multitude of health benefits without putting extra stress on the joints. We want to make cycling more available and bring awareness to the benefits for children who may otherwise feel limited in the sports available to them.
The DMV Trails League provides students to not only get experience riding in a supervised and safe environment, but children will also learn basic necessary bicycling skills, including how to:
- Properly put air in their tires
- Change a flat tire
- Patch a ripped inner tube
- Properly adjust their brakes
- Properly adjust the seat/saddle on their bicycle
- To install new pedals
- And, the proper tools they should carry on each ride
What our customers are saying
"I picked my bike up today after having the deluxe tune-up done and I immediately went for a little ride once I got home. I've had this bike for 3 years and it rides better than it did new. I'm so thankful for the awesome and friendly customer service!!! Matt is great at what he does!! I will definitely be coming here for any of my bike needs! Thanks again!"
- Eric Perkins
"Matt is amazing! I’m a returning bicyclist after years of not having one. I assembled it myself but has having issues with a derailleur. I missed my original appointment and rescheduled without a problem. Once I got to the shop, Matt was so friendly and knowledgeable about bikes. He didn’t mind any questions, taught a bit about bikes, and gave me maintenance tips. The repair was quick and I have not had a problem since. If I have an another problem, I’ll for sure return to the shop. Highly highly recommend Jafe Cycling!"
- Angel Ramirez
